How We Chose Virginia Beach
By Barry Krost
In May of 2016 the Venue search team of Dr. Michaelene Ruhl, James Woeber and myself gathered information about a number of cities in North America as possible sites for the 2017 Systemic Constellations conference. We had lots of information, but we wanted to step into the field together and see how we would experience each of these possible cities and hopefully narrow our attention. James led us in a guided experience where we tuned into each city one by one and explored a number of variables.
As we explored each of the cities, all three of us, independently, kept being drawn toward the East coast below Washington, DC. When we stepped out of the field we discovered we each had been drawn to an area that was not part of our intended search. Further exploration made it clear it was not Washington, DC but somewhere in Virginia. We googled to see what cities we might be feeling, including Norfolk, Hampton, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Stepping back into the field, we narrowed our venue search. Again we felt that same compelling feeling of being drawn east, but now it was clear to us that it was Virginia Beach. It felt mysterious, compelling, and we knew deep healing for our participants could happen there. We found from a brief search online that there was a long history of colonialism, slavery and war in Virginia, and it seemed like that might be part of what was drawing us there. We sensed that we were acknowledging something that would become more obvious as the planning process unfolded.
